Google Local Services Ads (LSA) Explained

Google Local Services Ads (LSA) are pay-per-lead ads that appear above all other Google results — including standard Search ads and organic listings — when a user searches for a nearby home service. Advertisers pay only when a qualified lead contacts them via call or message through the ad. To run LSAs, businesses must pass a Google screening process covering identity verification, business registration, insurance, and licensing. Verified businesses earn the Google Guaranteed or Google Screened badge.

Full Definition

Google Local Services Ads (LSA) are a paid advertising product from Google designed for businesses that provide in-home or on-site services: plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, locksmiths, garage door repair companies, house cleaners, landscapers, roofers, and dozens of other trades. Unlike standard Google Search ads, which charge per click, LSAs operate on a pay-per-lead model — the advertiser is billed only when a potential customer contacts the business directly through the ad by phone call or message.

LSA units appear at the very top of Google Search results, above both paid Search ads and organic listings. Each unit displays the business name, star rating, number of reviews, years in business, service area, and — if verified — a trust badge. The format is designed to be a direct connection point between the consumer's intent and the contractor, bypassing the intermediate step of visiting a website.

The Google Guaranteed badge (for home services trades) and Google Screened badge (for professionals such as real estate agents, lawyers, and financial advisors) indicate that the business has completed Google's verification process. For home services, Google Guaranteed is the applicable designation.

Why It Matters in 2026

LSAs have become one of the highest-intent ad placements available to home service contractors. A user who types "water heater replacement near me" and sees an LSA result is moments from making a call — the search intent is transactional and the timeline is typically urgent.

The pay-per-lead billing model changes the economic logic compared to pay-per-click campaigns. Contractors pay for a contact rather than for traffic that may or may not convert. Google also allows businesses to dispute leads that are clearly invalid — wrong service type, outside the declared area, or spam — and receive credit for those calls, reducing wasted spend.

The Google Guaranteed badge carries consumer trust weight: Google backs covered services with a satisfaction guarantee up to a lifetime cap (terms vary by category and region). This reassurance is particularly relevant for high-stakes home services purchases where the consumer has no prior relationship with the contractor.

How It Works

  1. The contractor creates a Local Services Ads profile through Google's LSA portal, selects service categories (e.g., plumbing, drain cleaning, water heater installation), and defines service areas.
  2. Google initiates the verification process: identity check, proof of business registration, insurance certificates, and trade licenses where required by the contractor's category and state.
  3. Once verified, the contractor sets a weekly budget based on a target number of leads.
  4. When a user in the declared service area searches for a covered service type, the LSA unit may appear at the top of results. Google's ranking algorithm for LSAs weighs review score, responsiveness, proximity, and bid competitiveness.
  5. A consumer calls or messages through the ad. Google records the contact and charges it against the weekly budget if it meets validity criteria.
  6. The contractor can dispute invalid leads — wrong service, out-of-area location, accidental calls — through the LSA dashboard within the allowed dispute window.
