Full definition

HomeAdvisor is one of the oldest US digital marketplaces for residential home services. The platform was originally founded in 1998 as ServiceMagic, a Denver-based lead generation service for home improvement contractors. IAC (then InterActiveCorp) acquired ServiceMagic in 2004 and renamed the platform HomeAdvisor in 2012 to reflect its expanded advisory and matching focus.

In 2017, IAC combined HomeAdvisor with the publicly traded review platform Angie's List, forming ANGI Homeservices Inc. (Nasdaq: ANGI). The corporate entity rebranded to Angi Inc. in March 2021, repositioning HomeAdvisor as a consumer-facing brand within the broader Angi platform ecosystem. In March 2025, Angi Inc. completed its spin-off from IAC and became a fully independent publicly traded company.

HomeAdvisor connects homeowners seeking project help with pre-screened local contractors across trades including plumbing, HVAC, roofing, electrical, painting, and remodeling.

How the lead model works

HomeAdvisor's contractor-facing product, marketed under the Angi Leads brand, operates on a pay-per-lead basis. Homeowners submit project requests through HomeAdvisor or the Angi consumer app, describing the job type and location. The platform's matching algorithm distributes each request to a set of contractors in the relevant geographic area and trade category. Each contractor who receives the distribution is charged a lead fee, whether or not they attempt to contact the homeowner.

Contractors maintain a profile that includes reviews, licenses, insurance verification, and background check status, which the platform surfaces to homeowners during the matching process. Profiles with strong review histories and verified credentials may receive preferential distribution within the platform's ranking.

Membership arrangements and per-lead pricing vary by market and are subject to change; contractors should confirm current rates directly with Angi.

Why it matters for contractors

HomeAdvisor's long operating history and large installed consumer base make it one of the higher-volume entry points for contractor businesses seeking immediate job flow. The brand is recognized across most US metro and suburban markets, and homeowner intent on the platform is generally transactional — users have an active project in mind.

The shared-lead structure creates competitive pressure at the moment a lead is received. Because the same request is sent to multiple contractors, first-response speed is the primary determinant of contact rate. This dynamic rewards contractors with robust follow-up processes and penalizes those relying on manual or slow outreach.

Difference from owned demand

Demand sourceCost structureExclusivityLong-term asset
HomeAdvisor (Angi Leads)Pay per shared leadNo — distributed to multiple prosNo — stops when spend stops
Google Business ProfileTime investmentExclusiveYes — review equity accumulates
Local SEO contentAgency or internal costExclusiveYes — long-term traffic asset

HomeAdvisor delivers rented, non-exclusive demand. Volume scales with spend but does not accumulate into an owned channel. Contractors who use the platform most effectively treat it as a top-of-funnel acquisition tool while systematically converting one-time customers into repeat business through owned CRM and review channels.
