Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the free listing that controls how a local business appears in Google Search and Google Maps. It displays the business name, address or service area, phone number, hours, service categories, photos, and customer reviews. For home service contractors, it is the single most important digital asset for capturing local search intent: a well-maintained profile with strong reviews appears in the local map pack, which sits above organic results for most near-me and city-service queries.

Google Business Profile (GBP), previously known as Google My Business (GMB), is a free tool from Google that lets any local business manage its presence across Google Search and Google Maps. When a homeowner searches for "plumber near me" or "roof repair Dallas," Google surfaces a map unit — commonly called the local pack or map pack — with up to three business listings before any organic web results appear. Those listings are Google Business Profiles.
A complete GBP includes: business name, physical address or service-area configuration (for businesses that go to the customer rather than hosting them), phone number, website URL, hours of operation, service categories, individual service listings with optional prices, a photo and video gallery, customer reviews with owner responses, Google Posts for promotions and updates, and a Q&A section. Contractors who serve customers at their location rather than at a fixed address — plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians — can hide their physical address and list service areas by ZIP code or radius instead.
Why It Matters in 2026
Google determines which profiles appear in the local pack using three documented ranking factors: relevance (how well the profile matches the search query), distance (proximity to the user's location), and prominence (review count, average rating, profile activity, and external web signals). A profile with incomplete categories, no photos, and few reviews will lose position to a competitor with a fully optimized profile, regardless of how long either business has been operating.
Customer reviews carry particular weight. Google's own guidance notes that businesses with more high-quality reviews improve their chances of ranking well in local results. In home services — where purchase decisions are often urgent and driven by trust — the review count and recency visible in the map pack directly influence whether the homeowner calls.
Beyond traditional search, AI-powered answer engines including Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT with web access, and Perplexity increasingly pull business data from GBP to answer queries like "best-rated HVAC contractor in Austin." A profile with inconsistent or missing data risks being cited incorrectly — or not cited at all.
How It Works
- The business owner creates or claims the profile at business.google.com and enters all business information.
- Google verifies that the business is legitimate through one of several methods: postcard with verification PIN sent to the listed address, phone or text verification, video verification, or instant verification for certain eligible account types.
- Once verified, the profile appears in Google Search and Maps. The owner manages it through the GBP dashboard or directly from a Google Search on a signed-in device.
- Customers leave star ratings and written reviews. Owners can and should respond to every review — responses are visible to all future searchers and factor into profile completeness signals.
- Google continuously evaluates profile activity — recency of photos, frequency of posts, response rate to reviews and questions — and incorporates these signals into local ranking.
