Full definition

Bark is an international lead marketplace operating in the United Kingdom under bark.com/en/gb. It covers a broad range of service categories — including building, plumbing, electrical work, landscaping, cleaning, and professional services — making it one of the widest-scope platforms in the UK domestic and commercial services market.

The platform's commercial model is pay-per-response: professionals create a free account, then purchase packs of credits to contact potential customers whose posted requests match their defined service area and categories. There is no monthly subscription and no minimum spend. Professionals keep 100 per cent of the revenue from each job.

How the lead and vetting model works

Customers submit a request describing the service they need, their location, and any specific requirements. Bark's automated matching system identifies professionals whose profile matches the request and notifies them. The professional reviews the request and, if interested, pays credits to respond — gaining access to the customer's contact details (phone number and email address).

Credit pricing is tiered: the standard rate is £1.80 excluding VAT per credit, with discounts available on bulk packs. The number of credits required to respond to a specific lead varies by service category and estimated job size, and is displayed before the professional commits. From November 2025, unused credits expire three months after purchase.

Multiple professionals can respond to the same customer request; there is no cap equivalent to the three-quote limit operated by some competitor platforms. The customer selects from the professionals who respond.

Bark does not operate a formal pre-admission vetting process of the kind used by Checkatrade or Rated People. Professionals register with basic details and can begin purchasing leads immediately. Trust signals are built through the profile review system: customers who hire through Bark are invited to leave verified reviews, and professional profiles display their response rate, review score, and category-specific badges.

Why it matters for trades

Bark's zero-subscription entry point lowers the barrier for new businesses or tradespeople testing a new service category without committing to a monthly fee. The credit model also makes cost directly proportional to activity: a trade that is fully booked spends nothing, and restarts lead purchasing as capacity opens up.

The open-access model means competition for individual leads can be high, particularly in densely populated areas or common categories. A strong profile — detailed service description, accurate photos, and a high review score — directly affects whether customers reply once contact is made, and in practice determines the return on credit spend.

The platform's breadth of service categories makes it relevant for trades offering multiple services across home improvement and professional services, rather than platforms that focus exclusively on building and renovation.
